Alfred Marion "Al" Gillis, 70, 2019 Leaf Drive, a retired Alcoa employe, died at 9 p.m. Sunday in Culver Hospital, where he had been a patient two weeks. Mr. Gillis was a former resident of Lafayette, where he served as city councilman from 1960-64. He was Tippecanoe County Democratic chairman from 1958-60. He was a member of Woodland Heights Christian Church and Eagles Lodge 1005 of Crawfordsville. He was a past president of Eagles Lodge 347 of Lafayette. Born March 24, 1902, at New Market, he was a son of Joseph and Martha Brown Gillis. Mr. Gillis was educated in Montgomery County schools. On May 28, 1927, he was married at Crawfordsville to Mary Hatch, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert of Boston, Mass.; a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Mecklenburg of Lafayette; two brothers, Clyde of Crawfordsville and Paul of New Albany; eight grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Powers Funeral Home, with Rev. Lucian Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Mace K of P Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
